Pentium III 是 Pentium II 的加强版，新增七十条新指令(SIMD，SSE)，与 Pentium II 一样有 Mobile、Xeon 以及 Cerelon 等不同的版本。特别的是，Pentium III 光是桌面型就拥有 Katmai Slot 1 、Coppermine Slot 1 以及 Coppermine Socket 370 等三种不同的系列。到后期，英特尔放弃插卡式接口而又回归到插槽接口（Socket 370）。
关于 Intel Pentium III
Intel Pentium III 处理器于 1999 年 2 月推出。第一款具有 Katmai 内核的 Pentium III 拥有 950 万个晶体管，一个 512 KB L2 高速缓存，以 1/2 处理器时钟工作，制造工艺为 0.25 微米。使用 100 MHz 或 133 MHz 的 FSB 实现了从 450 到 600 MHz 的时钟速率。
新开发的以 Coppermine 为核心的 Pentium III 于 1999 年 10 月推出，Intel 再次以更高的时钟频率开始了更好的性能竞赛。凭借显着改进的架构，采用 0.13 微米生产工艺制造，256 KB L2 高速缓存以全处理器时钟工作，英特尔的 PIII 处理器首次超过了 1 GHz 大关。
英特尔在 2001 年又向前迈进了一步，推出了带有 Tualatin 内核的 Pentium III。有 2 个版本，分别是具有 256 KB L2 缓存的 Pentium III 和具有 512 KB L2 缓存的 Pentium III-S，主要用于服务器。
Pentium III 以不同的包装销售。与其前身 Pentium II 一样，它最初是在 Slot 1 主板的 S.E.C.C. 外壳中制造的。不久之后，用于 Socket 370 的 FCPGA 封装中的第一批处理器找到了零售商。
FCPGA2 封装实现了对日益重要的散热的改进，该封装具有大型散热器。
Introduction
The Pentium III is an x86 (more precisely, an i686) architecture microprocessor by Intel, introduced on February 26, 1999. Initial versions were very similar to the earlier Pentium II, the most notable difference being the addition of SSE instructions. As with the Pentium II, there was also a low-end Celeron version and a high-end Xeon version. The Pentium III was eventually superseded by the Pentium 4. An improvement on the Pentium III design is the Pentium M.
